HOW HAS MY PAST EATEN AWAY AT MY LIFE?
Many people suffer from addictions to alcohol or drugs. Typically an alcoholic will say that ‘I don’t have a drinking problem,’ when his problem is evident to everyone.
I remember, as a young man, I smoked cigarettes during college. When I went to work, I tried on several occasions to stop.
However, I kept a secret pack of cigarettes in my briefcase for those times when no one was looking. Of course, I would tell everyone else they needed to quit smoking.
Well, my cover was blown wide open one day when my briefcase spilled open, throwing my cigarettes all over the floor.
The other guys in the shop cracked up with laughter. When we cover something we are ashamed of in an effort to hide it, we don’t realize that the day will come when it will be exposed.
God is all-knowing and omnipresent which means He knows every sin that you have done and sinful thought that you have thought.
There is no briefcase capable of hiding the reality of your life scars and mistakes from God.
When we cover our sin, we become defensive, paranoid, even frightened that someone is going to find out. We fear our parents, our spouses, our children, and our co-workers.
We fear that our reputation will be ruined if people learn what our lives are really like.
This sense of hiding is like the actor who wears a smiling mask to hide his frown. We all wear masks to hide our real feelings.
In fact, when you meet someone, often they say: How are you doing? In most cases, we answer I’m fine. But we really are not fine.
The truth is that if they knew what you struggled with on the inside, they wouldn’t like you anymore.
